"Word Classes"is our third of five "chapters". You've done the "basics"" and the chapter "sentences" (which was devided in to multiple subjects/paragraps). When you dismantle a sentence, each word can be put into a word class: nouns, verbs, pronouns, prepositions, adjectives, adverbs, interjections, determiners and conjunctions.
Basically:
a noun is the name of a person, place, thing, event or substance > examples: Dave, boy, beach, house, water
a verb describes an action, a state or an experience > examples: walk, like, touch
a pronoun takes the place of a noun (often refer to a noun that has already been used) > examples: she, it, who
a preposition is a word that is often used before a noun, pronoun or noun phrase connecting it to another word in the sentence > example: by bus, at 6 o'clock
an adjective describes a noun or a pronoun > examples: small, red, tired
an adverb describes or gives more information about a verb, a phrase, an adjective or another adverb > examples: the dress was beautifully made, she laughed loudly
an interjection is a word that is used to show a sudden expression of emotion > examples: Hey! Ouch! Wow!
a determiner a a words used before a noun to shoew which particular example of the noun you are referring to > examples: that dress, my holiday
a conjunction is a word that connects words, phrases and clauses in a sentence > examples: and, but, while, although
On the next few pages, you can find more information obout each of these word classes.
