Word classes - pronouns

In this paragraph, we're going to talk about pronouns. Pronouns take the place of nouns, esp. when those nouns are previously mentioned (they talked about it before). Example: Dave likes fish. He eats it every day. You don't use Dave's name twice; you replace it in the second part with a pronoun.

There are several groups of pronouns.

Subject pronouns (personal pronouns)> refer to specific person, thing or group of people/things > I, you, he/she/it, we, you they

Object pronouns (not the subject, but the object - lijdend voorwerp - of the sentence) Tip: use "give it to...."> me, you, him/her/it, us, you, them

Possessive adjectives> shows possession when the noun comes after the word (tip: ....book) >  my, your, his/her/its, our, your, their

Possessive pronouns> shows possession when the noun it's talking about is not behin it> mine, yours, his/hers/its, ours, yours, theirs

Reflexive pronouns> when someone "gives"something to him/herself. > I gave myself a book. > myself, yourself, himself/herself/itsself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves

Demonstrative pronouns> point to specific things > this/that/these/those

Indefinite pronouns>refer to something that is not definite por specific > something/one/body, anything/one/body, some, no-one, each

Relative pronouns> link to sentences together > who, whose, whom, which, that, what

Interrogative pronouns (Question words/Who words) > used to ask questions > Who, whose, whom, what, why, where, when, which, how
